Carrot Ranch Flash Fiction Challenge, 18th February, 2015

February 18February 18, 2015 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about feeling good. Is it a relationship? A new dawn, a new day? A reprieve or a relief from earlier tension? Does it come from giving or receiving a gift? Is it the result of compassion? If you hear wedding bells, add them to the story.

I think Merlin had rather a rude awakening to 1st century Roman Judaea last week! All the healing arts he’d learned from his druid heritage seemed to have got thrown out the window. I think he must have been operating some ridiculous code of secrecy, in view of the fact that he was in a different and unfamiliar country, and century. Let’s see if he’s come to his senses a bit more this week …

Merlin Learns a New Way: Part II

“On balance, I think I’ll stay,” I reply to this woman named Anna, who clearly knows who’s boss! I give her my real smile too, the one that says I’m glad she can cut through convention to what really matters. I don’t get the chance to use this one often.

“Good!” she replies, hands on hips and a damp ringlet brushing her cheek where her efforts have worked it loose from its braid. The man she’s just patched up looks up at her, shocked thanks written in his worn features. “Because now we have a wedding to get to!”

… A little, perhaps. People who don’t take the fashionable bullshit usually impress him. And Anna definitely does not take it! I’m rather hoping there’ll be a chance to write Part III so that we can see what happens at the wedding :-).

If you’ve enjoyed this flash and you’d like to experience more of my Merlin, just pop across to the Blogging My Book tab, where you can also read more of his partners in fiction in the previous posts. It’s constantly growing as I add new scenes, too.

Brightest Blessings to you ALL, as always,

Tally :-)

There are lots of surprises in store for ALL.

  • Glad the prompts are stretching you! Actually, I know less about my topics than you do about most of Merlin’s manifestations and ages and have found that even after researching I still have gaps. So I fill them with imagination then try to find a knowledgeable historian to answer mores pecific questions!

I like Merlin’s position in this scene. Ironic, to consider that the medical profession was (and to an extent, still is) male dominated. And that women healers were routed out as witches. I’m frustrated that I can’t go to a midwife for female issues because state law prohibits well-womean visits. It feels like women are still prohibited from the old healing arts!

They always stretch me, Charli! You have an unerring arrow for a prompt which always seems to drive right for the next thing I need to be thinking about! I think of it as the magic of the world we choose to live in.

I must admit that one came from the stars – you know, that thing where ideas float past you and as you grab onto them you know you don’t have to take responsibility for them because they’re external things you just picked out of the air as they passed by! I didn’t want to think it through because I like the freshness of that approach for flash. Not for the final cut, just for the playing around with ideas part, which is something I’m finding flash is so brilliant at doing. Which probably means that by the time it becomes woven into the fabric of the story, Merlin will be an accomplished healer who was having a bit of a moody on that day! Doesn’t matter for a while though, I seem to have slowed down significantly since just before Christmas on the blogging scenes thing. Funny thing, that was about the same time the Doc changed my meds! Am I seeing a connection here? Maybe that’s all part of the magic too, in some bigger picture way that I’m still unable to see ;-).

Loving the magic and hopefully looking forward to seeing what happens at the wedding.

      Hi Irene,
Sorry not to reply sooner, caught up in some of my own magic working itself out backwards, I expect!! Thanks for your support, it’s much appreciated. It’s so easy to think you’re writing into the void sometimes, so it’s wonderful when someone lets you know what they think. I hope you’ll enjoy Merlin’s magic this week! I was lucky enough to be able to continue the sequence on to include the wedding; there’s no mention of wine or water, but I think it’s another of the most basic of forms of magic, and Jesus is undoubtedly somewhere on the guestlist :-).
